So how do you find reflection points?

There’s actually a really clever way to find each first reflection point in a room (the original idea was actually from GIK Acoustics). You will need a mirror, some tape, and another person to assist you. Follow these steps:

  1. Sit in your listening position, which is typically the spot where you will be seated to listen to music or watch a movie.
  2. Have your friend hold a small mirror along the wall, starting at one end of the wall and slowly moving it along the length of the wall.
  3. As your friend moves the mirror, watch for any points where you can see a speaker reflected in the mirror. These are the first reflection points on that wall.
  4. Repeat this process on all four walls of the room, making sure to mark each reflection point that you find. You can mark it with a piece of tape, as the tape won’t damage the walls.
  5. Keep in mind that there should be the same number of reflection points on each wall as there are speakers. So if you have two speakers, you should have two spots marked on each wall.
  6. Once you have found and marked all of the reflection points, you will know exactly where to focus your treatment efforts to improve the sound quality in the room.

It’s important to note that in addition to wall reflections, ceiling reflections should also be considered. The same process of using a mirror to find reflection points can be applied to the ceiling, in order to find and mark any reflection points on that surface.
